School Branding Through School Wall Art to Show Your School Values

School branding is critical in today’s competitive educational environment, and school wall art is a powerful way to share your school values, engage students in your school culture, and ensure that your well-crafted brand sets your school apart.

First impressions count, and none are quite as powerful as the visual representation of a school. Leveraging wall murals can immediately showcase your school’s identity, fostering a sense of pride among students and teachers and confirming your identity to visitors.

In this article, we share our experience of creating school wall art that enhances school branding so that you can leverage your spare wall space to make a lasting impression on all who walk through your doors.

Why Is School Branding Important?

Branding isn’t simply a smart logo or catchy slogan. Though these may help to embed your brand in people’s memories, branding in education cuts much deeper. It’s the embodiment of your school’s values. Mission, and culture. Get it right, and it can transform your school environment as it delivers many benefits.

The enhanced school spirit that comes with a sense of belonging to something bigger. When everyone identifies with a school’s values, it creates a cohesive and motivated community.

Your school’s branding also has the power to attract attention from the wider community. This includes parents, local businesses, and potential students. Does your branding showcase your commitment to educational excellence with a clear vision for your school’s future?

Furthermore, a school’s brand can motivate individual success. Visual elements such as wall art serve as constant reminders (both consciously and sub-consciously) of your school’s goals and the high standards it expects.

How Does Wall Art Play a Role in School Branding?

Wall art is a powerful tool in reinforcing a school’s brand identity. It helps to communicate school ethos and make abstract concepts both tangible and relatable. You can employ various techniques to bring your values and school culture to life – inspirational quotes, depictions of historical figures, and abstract designs are meaningful strategies.

Research shows that visual stimulation in schools aids children’s health and psychological wellbeing. Positive imagery can help reduce stress and enhance satisfaction with school life. Strategically placed wall art throughout a school supports the learning environment and promotes identification with your school’s branding.

Case Studies of Effective Wall Art Branding

Can wall art really improve and cement your school’s branding? Here is a small selection of case studies from projects we’ve undertaken to enhance identification with school values and culture:

Case Study: Fairfield School’s New Vision through Wall Art

Project Description: Fairfield School, a specialist institution in Batley, West Yorkshire, catering to students aged four to nineteen with complex needs, approached us for a comprehensive rebranding project. As part of this, School Business Manager Steve Walsh wanted to replace the outdated signage and school branding with something that truly represented the school’s dedication to excellence in special education. Our task was to design a new brandmark, develop comprehensive brand guidelines, and implement these through impactful internal and external signage, including engaging wall displays.

Results: The rebranding project for Fairfield School culminated in a transformative visual overhaul that included new welcome walls, internal and external signage, and thematic wall displays, such as an aquarium-themed entrance to their hydrotherapy pool. The new brandmark and signage effectively communicated the school’s commitment to embracing uniqueness and providing quality education. The vibrant and thoughtfully designed wall art not only beautified the school, but also created an inspiring environment for students, staff, and visitors. Feedback from the school highlighted the success of the project, noting how the new branding brought their vision to life and made a positive impression on the entire school community.

Case Study: St Jude’s Catholic Primary’s New Branding

Project Description: St Jude’s Catholic Primary School engaged us to assist in developing a vibrant new branding for their institution.

We began by implementing a lesson plan designed to involve the students in the creative process. Teachers used this plan to help students brainstorm and create logo designs, with the most promising ideas serving as the foundation for the new school logo. This approach ensured that the resulting logo was not only fresh and modern, but also had a personal connection to the students and the school community.

Results: The lesson plan proved highly effective, and the final logo was used to develop a comprehensive branding package, including promotional banners, informative leaflets, and updated school signage. The new signage featured translucent window graphics depicting active children, which helped to seamlessly integrate the exterior and interior spaces of the school.

Additionally, we installed prominent cut lettering near the main entrance, along with a large outdoor wall display featuring the new logo. This impactful visual element immediately conveyed the school’s story and values to all visitors.

Through this collaborative and creative process, St Jude’s Catholic Primary now boasts a distinctive identity that resonates with both the school family and the local community.

What Are the Best Strategies for Implementing Wall Art in Different Areas of the School?

Not all school spaces are created equal. They are different shapes and sizes, with different lighting and traffic flow. Some walls are scuffed by passing boots and bags; others have wandering hands to contend with. Here are our tips to implement school wall art effectively around your school.

Hallways and Corridors

Hallways and corridors are the arteries of the school, seen by everyone daily. Here are some ideas for impactful hallway art:

·       Welcoming and Inspiring Art

Use bright, welcoming colours and themes that inspire. This could include motivational quotes, school mascots, and symbols that reflect school values.

·       School Colours, Mascots, and Slogans

Incorporate these elements to strengthen brand identity and school pride.

Classrooms

Classrooms are where attention is really needed, so the art here should be both inspirational and educational, and focal to the subject matter being taught:

·       Subject-Specific Art

Tailor wall art to reflect the subjects taught in each room, such as scientific diagrams in a science lab or literary quotes in an English classroom.

·       Balancing Aesthetic and Functionality

Ensure that the art is not just decorative, but also supports learning objectives.

Common Areas (Dining Halls, Library, Entrance, etc.)

Common areas are social hubs that benefit from wall art promoting community and collaboration:

·       Design Collaborative Spaces

Use art to create inviting spaces that encourage interaction and community building.

·       Incorporate Quotes and Cultural Symbols

Select quotes from historical figures or cultural symbols that align with the school’s ethos.

Outdoor Spaces

Don’t forget the exterior of your school, which can also reflect your branding in education:

·       Murals

Outdoor art can make a bold statement and attract attention from the wider community.

·       Vibrant Learning Environments

Create outdoor classrooms or gardens that integrate art, making learning both fun and aesthetically pleasing.

·       Consistency with School Aesthetic

Ensure that outdoor art complements the overall branding and messaging of the school.

·       Use Weather-Proof Materials

The last thing you want is for outside school wall art to fade, flake, and fracture. We choose materials to stand the test of time, wherever the wall art is to be located. For example, for The Costello School branding project, we used Dibond for the outside mural depicting Jane Austen – a material that, like her novels, has been developed to last.

How Do You Align Wall Art with School Branding?

Aligning school wall art with school branding involves several key steps to ensure a cohesive and impactful outcome.

Collaborating with professional designers and artists is crucial. You’ll get a new perspective as well as benefit from their extensive experience and knowledge in the area. This will help to ensure that the final product is high quality, engaging, and appropriate for your school setting – and the environment within your school.

Don’t neglect to involve your school community in the process. Getting everyone involved helps to develop collective ownership of the project, delivering a more meaningful and impactful wall display and reflecting the diversity of all those who interact with the wall art every day.

Finally, it’s vital to ensure that your wall art is consistent with your school’s branding guidelines. This includes colour schemes, fonts, and themes – wherever the wall mural is located, all these aspects will complement all your other branded materials, helping to create a unified, professional brand identity throughout your school.

Your School Brand Depicted on Your School Walls Your Way

When you adorn your school’s walls with wall murals, you can create an impactful environment that represents your school’s values and culture. The benefits will continue to filter through your school year after year, delivering enhanced school spirit, improved student motivation and wellbeing.

In short, investing in creative wall art projects is a powerful step towards achieving a cohesive and inspiring educational atmosphere. Now is the time to transform your school’s walls into canvases that tell your unique story and showcase your values for all to see.
